Tips for summer entertaining with friends
Winter’s reach is starting to be a memory as spring begins to give way to summer. The warm air reminds us it’s time to go outside and play. Open your windows, air out the house and get ready for a summer of entertaining in a home that’s ready for company.
Start by clearing your walkways through your house to allow guests to travel through your living room to your outdoor area with ease, especially if you’re going to have kids running through the house this summer. Tidy up the accessories and other clutter and be sure to light a scented candle for ambiance (and odor control!).
Inside, close all the doors to rooms you don’t want guests to enter, but make sure the bathroom is clearly accessible and has plenty of hand towels.
If your kitchen and dining area are to be used during the party, wipe down all the tables (floors, etc…), and consider decorations if necessary, depending on the party’s theme. Use a side dresser or console as a buffet table to add more serving space.
The best way to set up is to make sure the flow of the party is clear and guests can easily transition from one part of your home to another, without tripping on furniture or other household accessories.
Once outside, landscaping and patio furniture can make a world of difference on the impression you can make on your guests. Create a little oasis in each corner of the yard, with a central gathering location. Tuck in one corner a few lounge chaises, while a nice outdoor table with plenty of comfortable cushioned chairs works well in another.
Another great option for sipping cocktails with friends is an outdoor bar table with stools. Add comfortable multi-colored cushions to the stool for a unique, modern look. Accent the table with hanging or track lighting and set up a small mini-fridge for a mini dining area outside.
If you have a really large family, an extended outdoor sofa and patio set with multiple chairs around a central table might work. Essentially bring the living room to your outdoor patio with a modern outdoor chaise with enough seats for 8 or more. Washable covers for your sofa cushions will come in handy, and look for them in a variety of colors such as blue, green, red and white.
Complete the look with just the right storage box and of course, the mainstay of a backyard, the barbeque.
