Art on modern furniture

Art on modern furniture, art in modern furniture, it seems as if these are synonymous terms. Modern furniture is beautiful, stylish and innovative synthesizing both function and form together in wonderful ways that can create a functional piece that simultaneously becomes art as well.

Take for example the works of modern furniture designers. Working with new materials in imaginative ways challenging traditional means and methods of construction have created furniture pieces that are wildly imaginative and can certainly stand on their own as a work of art. Stretching the limits of physical boundaries and material expectations we are delighted and inspired by something as mundane as a dining room chair.

Over scaled Baroque inspired armchairs that soar to the ceiling covered with luxurious velvets and leather are fit for a comfortable king and certainly become a conversation piece. But to be art doesn’t mean it has to be larger than life. Art is in the details and the expression of a thought, a line, a color or a concept. It can be whatever the artist had in mind. The inlaying of an intricately designed mosaic creates drama and acknowledgement of the fine craftsmanship involved in the best of modern furniture design. As art can be a one of a kind involving prototypes or limited editions, handmade modern sofas and chairs are valued for their uniqueness and scarcity.

Art can be playful and modern furniture has plenty of examples of sofas and chairs extruded into impossible plastic forms with wildly vibrant colors to prove the point. Here the design is the art with the method of mass production enabling more people to both have and appreciate fine art at an affordable price.

With some designers, exaggeration becomes the vehicle of expression with these forms covered in soft materials becoming the room providing both a platform for sitting, lying and as a floor. Just like art, our perception of what is a chair or a couch is challenged and reexamined in terms that are both at once simple and unexpected.

Tables, dining room, side tables and more have been the subject of many modern furniture designer’s explorations. Experimenting with the concept of stacking or expansion and contraction has led to intriguing solutions that have involved the piecing together of different materials with interlocking forms. With the ability to be able to transform the physical dimensions of a piece of modern furniture, it also allows us to manipulate spatial relationships as well. Art as physical form to satisfy basic human needs is the essence of modern furniture design.
